Ask Alistair: What do you see as the most influential trends in accounting and finance within the hospitality industry?

05/03/2010

Ask Alistair The hospitality industry presents a unique set of challenges for finance professionals. Effective financial management requires you to adapt with speed and precision to an increasingly complex hospitality business environment. The role of financial managers today goes far beyond handling a multitude of daily transactions. You must also help drive company performance by sharing valuable information hidden in transactional data, and adapting processes fluidly as business conditions and regulatory environments change.

Over the last five years, a number of trends have emerged that have helped make your job a little easier. Many software vendors have tailored their applications specifically to address industry requirements—and part of your daily routine—such as extended data analysis (market segments, room and meal types, and customer preferences), managing mixed property types (hotels, timeshares, condos), and satisfying industry standards. Improved data warehousing capabilities also help ease the heavy daily reporting and budgeting.

But probably the most exciting trend is the move toward cloud computing (see our recent post). In the hospitality industry, cloud computing offers an efficient solution by taking your applications—accounting and other financial systems, energy, servers, CRAC unit, Ethernet switches—above the property, potentially saving your company hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.

Overall, the right combination of financial management, reporting, and performance management tools is essential to your success. You need financial management solutions that provide tight alignment between business strategies and operations while improving your visibility into trends and other factors affecting business performance. Your solution should enable you to integrate and streamline local and multinational financial management processes from end to end. And it should help you obtain a reliable view of financial performance across the entire enterprise, as well as gain the flexibility and control you need to adapt to the demands of the most challenging business environment.
