With a hectic 2017 drawing to a close and public sector managers finalizing their plans for a dynamic and productive new year, there are a couple of business drivers we can almost certainly count on.
The pace of change will continue to accelerate.
Government agencies at all levels will still be challenged to stretch their human, and IT resources ever farther, to meet rising public expectations in an era of “lean” budgets.
And technology will be the key ingredient enabling the public sector to deliver on its promises.
Last year was nothing if not momentous. The Federal IT Modernization Plan produced by the White House American Technology Council emphasized cloud migration and modernization. FedRAMP solidified its standing as the public sector standard for IT security. And Infor achieved FedRAMP Ready status in mid-August. Analysts like Gartner still saw some uncertainty in the end destination for federal digital strategy. But it was clear that the path forward would be driven by technology, with:
- Automation and smart devices reducing the need for “butts in seats”
- The cloud increasingly taking precedence over on-premises technology
- A shift in software driving a need for upskilling of public sector personnel
- Cybersecurity still heading the list of priority technology issues facing government organizations.
Here are some of the biggest stories we followed in 2017.
- The digital transformation through cloud computing stepped up to meet the expectations of consumers and an increasingly mobile workforce. Online experiences like Amazon and Netflix set the standard for more routine online transactions, from buying a business permit to paying taxes.
- Small efforts at back office modernization delivered big results for financial managers looking to deliver better, more reliable and responsive public service at lower cost.
- State and local government connected the dots between digital systems and service delivery for increasingly tech-savvy stakeholders (also known as citizens and taxpayers).
- Human resource managers turned to powerful new recruitment tools like talent science to attract and retain millennial employees in spite of constrained budgets for compensation and benefits.
- Healthcare organizations increasingly recognized Mobile Integrated Health systems as an important part of the solution to challenges like overburdened emergency rooms, abused 911 systems, and sub-optimal management of population health.
It’s no news that public sector managers face serious organizational, logistical, and financial challenges that are certain to continue in 2018. But when we talk to our contacts and partners in municipal, state, and federal government agencies, we most often pick up a tone of determined optimism—a sense that the mission is essential, the work is valuable, and success is truly the only option.
Even more important than that basic motivation, these seasoned, highly effective managers can see a practical, achievable path to meeting their objectives. Almost invariably, that path depends on solid, proven technology—which increasingly means cloud-based technology—to deliver security, mobility, efficiency, and user experience.
We know 2018 will be another year of change and volatility. That’s all the more reason to have the right tools in your toolbox to make sure your agency, office, or program can deliver on its mandate and thrive.
