Paperless Planning

The shift toward paperless business has been fueled not just by the green movement, but also by the need and desire for real-time collaboration and cost and time savings. I believe that within the next few years, most building and planning departments will become paperless. The technology is readily available and already in place in many cases. Virtually all commercial plans are already electronic, so the next step is to receive them over the Internet, review them concurrently rather than consecutively, and monitor performance through an integrated permitting and inspection system, resulting in electronic files that can easily be shared and stored.

The mobile inspections process can also take advantage of being paperless. The less driving and less time inspectors spend doing paperwork means spending more time actually performing inspections.

This process reduces costs for both the developer and government staff. And reducing paper and travel ultimately has a positive impact on the environment.

Development and planning agencies that go paperless realize lower costs, provide better service to their citizens, and reduce their carbon footprint through a planet-friendly process.

If you have any questions or suggestions about moving your agency to a paperless environment, send me an email at kent.marjerison@infor.com or submit your comments here.
